How things have changed

When filming in the football ground it made me consider how much things have changed because before the 1950's you did not have light-weight camera's and equipment and you could not sync the sound. This made me think how impossible really it would have been for us trying to film in a football ground if we didn't have small, light-weight cameras to use and ones that can record the own decent quality sound as well.
I was reading in John Corners book 'The art of record' that British drama-documentaries came from the story-documentaries that were about during the documentary film movement around the Second World World in the 30's. These documentaries involved using reconstruction a lot of the time because it was so hard to get 'actuality' footage or actual footage of things in certain locations because of the fact they didn't have lightweight equipment.
Reconstructions would overcome this problem because you could use actors to play the parts and show what you originally wanted to show but couldn't access due to these restraints. Although this was done at the time as a way around their problems reconstruction and dramatisation has become very popular within documentaries now because they normally offer us a much more entertaining insight to things.

2 Minute Poetic Screening

Today we screened our 2 minute poetic documentary and I wasn’t too optimistic about it as I knew the editing had been rushed quite a bit despite the fact we were quite organised and had filmed quite a lot of footage.
I think one problem was that we went ahead a filmed lots of interviews etc because they were important and we wanted to get them as soon as we could but what we didn’t think about was getting footage that we could use for the poetic. We did have a storyboard for it but as time went along we realised that we weren’t going to get enough footage of just Tango to make up most of the 2 minute so we decided to film lots of football imagery of around the stadium of things like burger vans, stalls, police, fans etc and then build it up so it leads onto the Tango stuff.
Due to the fact we had to wait until the Saturday home game to get a lot of this football imagery (as on previous shoots we’d mainly concentrated on Tango footage) we didn’t leave ourselves a lot of time to get it into the edit. Although I still feel more of the edit should have been completed before this point so we could just put the new stuff in at the beginning where it needed to go or replace some shots with the better ones.
I also had ideas to use some split screen which we didn’t get chance to do and also add the text bits like the Tweets etc in a better way.

When we screened our film we did have some positive reactions and some people felt we showcased Tango well but some people thought we didn’t make it clear enough what was so special about this person. I think that may be down to us concentrating on too many things like the build up to a football match with football imagery and then the Tango stuff and maybe we should have concentrated on Tango a bit more. I think I was reluctant to show too much Tango stuff because I wanted to hold it back for the 10 minute piece because the poetic was just meant to be us showing his rowdy side and then the rest of him for the 10 minute. I think what we lacked was Tango acting up and maybe we could have highlighted it a bit more – I think my split screen idea, if we’d had time to do it, might have done this to an extent because I wanted to do a split screen of him taking his top off, singing/shouting, swearing, doing hand gestures etc which might have been more effective.

One of the criticisms was the music we used I think because it was a bit too cheesy, I expressed I didn’t really like it because it was an England song and we are doing a documentary about a Sheffield Wednesday fan but the editor said it was good for creating pace for the montage we had and it was a better song to cut to rather than using the actual band audio we recorded from the match like I’d suggested because it didn’t create much of a beat.

One thing they did like was the use of sound at the beginning where we used the crowd cheering and built it up over the images of the football ground, I too thought Joe had done a good job with this and would have liked to have used more stuff like this all the way through rather than putting a song over the top. I think for the 10 minute we will spend more time as a group discussing the audio as it always gets left until the last minute with most people when it really shouldn’t as it’s integral to the feel, tone and pace of a film. If possible I would like to get some of the band together to play some Sheffield Wednesday’s songs for us when there’s no crowd about singing over it because that way we’ll have some pure audio to play about with.

Overall we got 62% which I was happy with due to the fact I knew how quickly we had to do the edit but then I was also a bit disappointed because we had put a lot of effort into being organised as we got our idea very quickly and started work on it almost straight away so I didn’t think we’d have these problems. If we have time I think I’d like to redo our 2 minute because we’ve all put a lot of effort in and I’d like our piece to reflect that.

Different angles of stadium – CU’s
  Programme seller
 Turnstiles CU

Rowdy fans singing and shouting, waving scarves – for camera
 Tango heading to/entering ground
 Clock at 3pm
 Tango taking top off
Tannoy announcing Sheffield Weds players names
 Tango acting up (2 angles)
Recording crowd sounds – singing, shouting
 Band playing
 Tango putting top back on
 Clock at 4.45pm
Empty kop stand when fans have left
Tango leaving stadium – wave at camera?

Today I got a copy of the footage from Joe so I could look through it all and see if there's any good shots or sounds I'd like to use for the two minute piece. I did this because we have a lot of footage from the flip-cams and DSLR from within the ground of Tango etc during a match and Joe might be a bit pushed for time to look through everything completely as the deadline is next Monday and I don't want a potentially good or interesting bit of footage to be missed.

Here is the list of potential clips to use:

I've also noted what each clip was useful for to make it a bit easier.
(also as we can't have sync sound for the two minute some of the sound and visual might be better to use for the ten minute piece).

Update!

So far I've been quite pleased with the organisation of the group, everyone has played a part and done what has been asked of them which makes things run a lot smoother and I've found because of how well we've worked as a team so far that things have gone better and more to plan than previous productions I have been part of.

I think we have got some good footage so far my only worry is that we've got quite a lot of stuff that will make up our ten minute documentary but not enough for our two minute of which the deadline is getting close now. I have come up with a plan/schedule of everything that we need and how an when we're going to get it but because this means waiting for the next Sheffield Weds home game we have to wait until Saturday the 16th (as the last 2 games have been away) and our deadline is the 18th at 4 I think so this will be pushing it a bit.

I have planned to meet up this Monday, as I have still not seen the rushes yet, and I'm going to see what Joe has managed to do so far and see what footage we already have and what needs to be done or re-shot this Saturday although I already have a good idea in my mind of what we need to do. I have said to the group we need to get the edit done as much as we can before Saturday so once we get the rest of the footage then it will be a case of putting it into the edit.

As far as sound goes we will have the atmos of the crowd to help build up the Tango acting up montage and we also have the music from the band which they have said we can download from their website and we have permission to use. We have not really thought about making our own music for the two minute piece but because of what we already have sound/music-wise and the fact it's only two minutes and don't think it will require any more music. For the ten minute piece though I do expect us as a group to think about making something ourselves although none of us are taking sound as a skill so this could be a challenge, I do know someone that makes and produces their own music though who said they'd be willing to help us if we need something making. Also I'm not really picturing music as a big part of it as I think it will be mainly about the diegetic sounds we have captured that will really add to the feel and tone of the piece. When I've watched other football documentaries not all of them have used music as a dominant feature throughout and I quite like how naturalistic it has felt because of that.

With regards to the ten minute piece I think that will be less of a panic towards the end because we already have so much footage and interviews and also other interviews planned so we will have more time to think about what we want to do about music.

Emailing Peterborough Utd

Since we didn't get anywhere with asking permission to film in Sheffield Wednesdays ground on a match day, and I also tried emailing Leicester City with no reply, I decided to try emailing Peterborough United as Sheffield Weds play them on the 27th April and it's also where I live so thought I might have more chance in getting somewhere.
I realise that the match is only 2 days before our deadline so if we do film there we wont be able to use too much footage as we don't want to be doing really any editing or sound that close to the deadline. The reason I want to go though is that Tango is definitely more rowdy at away games and I have seen him before at Peterborough and he was singing and shouting as the Peterborough fans a lot and also tried to run out on to the pitch when they scored.
I also want to go there because Peterborough has an all standing side for the away fans so we could stand wherever we wanted to to and get close to Tango because he goes in the standing bit. This stand is also close to the home fans which is also something that gets him going a lot because he can aim a lot of his chants and gestures at the home fans.
This game is also the second to last game of the season which means it will be quite an important game for both teams and that should make for a more rowdier crowd and Tango.

I would like to carry on with this documentary after the deadline and get a copy of all the footage myself so even if we don't manage to get much of the footage from this match into the final edit it will still be something I will use myself.

After emailing the media department of the club I had a reply from Phil Adlam asking what I wanted to film exactly so I told him it would literally just be of Tango watching the match and maybe some crowd shots. He then asked what camera would we be using I said it would be a Sony Z1 and maybe a Canon 650D and he basically said that would be fine and that we would need to go to reception first so the safety officer could check our equipment and also just reminded me that not to film any of the game. I siad that's fine and also asked if it's ok to bring a rifle mic which he said was fine.

Email:

Hannah:
Hi, I am a Film and Media student at Sheffield Hallam University (from Peterborough) and I am looking to gain permission to film at the home game between Peterborough Utd and Sheffield Wednesday

on the 27th April as I am doing a documentary on Tango - Paul Gregory the well-known Wednesday fan?

The footage I want to obtain is mainly of Tango (Paul), who we have consent to film, and would not be any of the match play itself.

Phil:
What filming are you looking to do exactly?

Hannah:
it will be pretty much all just be filming of Paul Gregory (Tango) as he's watching the game and maybe some crowd shots if that's permitted

Phil:
What kind of camera is it?

Hannah:
Sony Z1 video camera and a Canon 650D

Phil:
I have no problem in this – but please note that this is our last home game of the season and it is imperative that no filming of the pitch or the games takes place. We will also need you to report to reception on the day for the equipment to be checked by our safety officer and please note that if you are in the terrace filming the fan, you do so at your own risk.

Hannah:
Ok, that's fine thanks. We will also have a rifle mic as well if that all right?

Phil:
As long as you don’t start shooting people with the rifle thats fine..

Hannah:

Ha ha cheers

Phil:
No problem :)

Twitter - Wednesdayite opinions

After having a bit of success tweeting the football players I found a Sheffield Wednesday fan Twitter page so I decided to tweet the fans and ask them what their views on Tango were:

Hi I'm doing a documentary on Tango (Paul Gregory) & it would be great if any Weds fans could tell me what they think of him?

Straight after I sent this I got a message saying that Wednesdayite had retweeted my post so everyone could see it which I thought was really helpful of them:

hope the RT gets you some responses

People started tweeting their comments at me straight away which was great here are the responses I got:

he's fat wiv a bald head

I remember picking him up in our away day minibus from chap 20 yrs ago, used to play guess the Chinese menu..

He's a dick who thinks it's ok to punch women in the face! We should tell him to sod off back to Wolves!!

. The man is a foolish legend

originally in 90's funny..but a nomark wannabee look at me!! Fu k off..ive come to support wednesday not you

he gives Wednesday fans a bad name. What a idiot!!!

 he's a complete tool, a waste of a documentary

bloke has his shirt off for lads every game, he's a true supporter and every time I've seen him always tries to keep peace

I was actually quite surprised at the amount of negative comments there were but it makes it quite interesting in terms of the documentary because I think a lot of them will just see him fooling about and would maybe see a different perspective of him if they were to watch the documentary.
I think it's a good idea to see how people feel who support the same team as him because obviously they will see him about a lot.
I would like to try and use some of these tweet in the documentary by either having them come up over the top of the footage of him being loud and boisterous at matches in the montage section of the two minute or having them appear sporadically throughout the montage section or maybe all together in one frame/shot.

Third Shoot - Monday 4/3 Wolverhampton

For our third shoot me, Paul, Luke and Jacob had arranged to go to Tango's home town Wolverhampton to interview him at work and at home. They went to collect the equipment and I drove to the Hubs car park to meet them.
We arrived a bit early which was good as I wanted to go and get some shots of the Wolves stadium to use as establishing shots and also cutaway when we ask Tango about why didn't he choose to support his home team.

We then drove to Hills Coaches which is the coach company that Tango manages. While here we did an interview him in his office, I noticed there was a Wednesday Owl teddy in the office so I asked Tango to put it on his desk so we could see it in the shot as I thought it was a nice touch. We did the interview from two different angles and distances so it gives Joe something to cut between and will make it a bit more interesting visually. When I was watching Soccer AM I noticed they do this a lot when interviewing someone - they will cut from a front view to a side view continually which gives it a bit of pace and makes it a bit more edgy than just one static shot. After the interview I told Jacob to get some close ups of certain things in the office like the owl, his mobile phone which had a Wednesday cover, the calendar of which he makes reference to when talking and also he mentioned his company provided coaches for the Brazilian Olympic team and there was a picture of this as well. The close ups are to be used as cutaways during the interview.

We also got lots of cutaways of the premises and the coaches coming in and out. While Jacob and Luke were off getting these me and Paul were having a chat with him and it seemed like he was saying a lot of interesting stuff off of camera, for example one of the questions we asked was had he been in trouble with the police which he seemed to dodge a bit but outside he told us that he was arrested once for going on to the Dom Valley stadium track and running on it but that in the end he was released because there were no signs saying not to go on it and also he didn't go anywhere near the pitch or players. I asked if he would say this on camera for us but he said he didn't want to which was a shame as I said it wasn't that bad of a story.

Tango then kindly offered to leave work so we could go back to his to interview him on more personal things. When we arrived there he took us straight to his games room which was blue and white (Wednesday club colours) with a big flag on the wall, a fruit machine, dart board, SWFC clock with Tango bought for his 50th from his wife, SWFC mugs, SWFC hat etc so it was a really good setting for the interview. We did the interview on the sofa and we had to use a bit of lighting just to brighten up his face a bit, the only thing I'm a bit worried about is the shadow his head was casting on the wall behind I hope it looks ok on camera. After we all felt the interview went quite well as he seemed to relax a bit more a tell us some stories after me and Paul had coerced him a bit. I also wished afterwards though that we had taken two cameras and filmed from two different angles like before as I didn't want to re-shoot as the interview was so good and natural to do it again I felt you would lose all that.

Again I asked Jacob to get some separate close up shots of things in the room and I asked Tango if he would take us into the room and talk a little bit about the things of interest or with a story. This had to be done handheld though so I hope it doesn't turn out too shaky. I asked Tango if he would take his top off (in front of the flag) and take us through his Sheffield Wednesday tattoos.

I asked Tango if he had any photos he said he had loads but unfortunately he said they were upstairs or in the loft somewhere so I don't think he wanted to go searching for them as he had to get back to work and I didn't want to push it.
We then got a natural shot of him making a cup of tea in the kitchen (I noticed a SWFC mug in his games room so asked if he could use that) and then as one last shot I asked if he could sit on the sofa watching TV and stroke the dogs (I assumed they were his wife's as they were quite small with pink bobbles in their fur) I thought this would be quite a nice shot as he quite a big bloke and is known for taking his top off and shouting and swearing so I thought this would show him in a gentler light and would possibly be a nice shot to end the 10 minute documentary on.
